WEb hosting at BottomLine - FAQs
How come you limit plans to one domain?
One of the primary goals of Windows based web hosting is to preserve long-run performance and stability on our web servers. Windows servers, by virtue of ASP.NET and the .NET framework and server-side scripting, make intensive use of what is called on-server processing. Therefore it is critical for long-term performance of these web servers that they not be overloaded. By limiting the number of domains that can be added on one plan, we can control the number of domains being placed on one web server over time, which goes a long way to controlling server loads. It may cost a little more compared to dirt-cheap hosts, but still represents a great value in Windows based web hosting and, importantly, customers appreciate their web sites performing as well a year from now as they do today. The choice is yours.

Why hasn't BottomLine moved to Windows 2008/IIS 7 (released Feb. 08) for new hosting plans?
There is more to web hosting hosting than Windows/IIS. For hosts, we use numerous 3rd party applications for database, email and hosting automation, and scripting engines, all of which must be fully compliant with the OS and the web server (IIS), before upgrading. Customer web service applications also need to be compliant. This keeps problems to a minimum and reliablity at it's highest. We anticipate a 6 to 12 month period of time for formal adoption of the new operating system and IIS 7 now that it is in final release, as our various vendors certify full compliance with the new operating system and IIS 7.

How does remaining on Windows 2003/IIS6 for now affect me?
The implications of remaining on these versions are to the host, not the hoster. Windows 2003/IIS6 supports the latest technologies such as .NET framework 3.5, AJAX and the latest MS development tools, for our customers. During the adoption period mentioned above. Microsoft itself is insuring a smooth, orderly, transition to the new operating system. Generally they assume an adoption period of 12 months in the market for release of new major versions on their technology.

Who should host with BottomLine?
Those that have at least basic exposure to web hosting concepts, and use of control panel automation to manage their domains. For those that are brand new to web hosting they are encouraged to use our service if you are willing and motivated to learn the ropes. Those that place tickets saying "here this is broken, fix it" will find they do not get good response from our company.
For those of you that do not know what you are doing, and want an outsourced IT department at your disposal, we say pay more like you should to get that kind of support. Which won't be in the affordable hosting market.
